If they answer the questions correctly they will reveal their first word. In Task 2 students will use the same informational text to complete a crossword puzzle. Within the puzzle there are several hidden letters which will need to be unscrambled on the completion of the puzzle to reveal the second word. In Task 3 students will have to cut out 27 timeline task cards about important events or figures from African American athletes in the history of sport before putting them in order from the earliest date to the most recent. When they have finished their task they can glue them onto the answer key which will reveal their third word. In Task 4 students will have to find the missing words in a wordsearch puzzle before finding a hidden word from the letters that are left over in the puzzle. This hidden word is their fourth and final word. A great classroom display and sorting activity that is perfect for introducing students to the some of the key events and figures from African American sport. There are 27 posters or task cards that include many key events such as Jack Johnson winning the heavyweight boxing championship, Jackie Robinson breaking the racial barrier in Major League Baseball, Wilma Rudolph’s Olympic feats, to more modern victories like LeBron James becoming the all-time highest points scorer in the NBA. The posters look great as a display in the classroom and the cards are brilliant for Black History Month or for looking at some of the inspirational figures in more detail. Nearly all answers are not automatically generated, but only require a small amount of work to assign points. This is because the aim is to get students writing answers and not to just have multiple choice options.
